Living in wonder.
Capturing the splendor.
Sharing the awe.
My grandfather, Watson Wolfe, was a photographer for the US Navy in World War II. Some of my fondest memories of him were looking through old photos he took, and marveling at his collection of antique medium-format cameras. Long before digital cameras, he promised to teach me photography and how to develop in a dark room, but sadly, by the time I was old enough to really understand the art and science, he was suffering from advanced Alzheimer’s disease. Thankfully though, he did inspire me to pick up the craft on my own and so each image here is dedicated to him, my Papa Wolfe, the best grandfather a boy could have.
Photography for me is a meditative retreat. Time, usually alone, in nature, breathing the fresh mountain air, standing in wonder and awe of 14,000 foot-tall peaks, or marveling at the flight of eagles, osprey, or myriad song birds that migrate through Boulder county. I enjoy the process of planning a photographic expedition in advance, calculating when the most ideal light will hit my chosen subject, such as a particular peak or Aspen grove, at the right angles, coupled with weather so we get texture, color, and drama in the sky. I enjoy the challenge of getting to remote places well before sunrise, and the challenge of capturing wildlife which can move quickly and often unpredictably. And lastly, I love the processing of raw images into final prints, as this is where I work to bring out the drama, mood, and emotions that each image is meant to evoke.
Photographs of the grand landscapes of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado were so inspiring for me as a young adult. They sparked a fire in me, a yearning for adventure, and rang an inner bell that called me to take charge of my life, to make it what I wanted it to be and move to Boulder county Colorado where I live and explore the mountains with my son and daughter. I hope my photographs can inspire you as well.
